Main Street – Lake Valley

Lake Valley, NM
This was a silver mining town that had its heyday from 1881 to 1893. When the price of silver plummeted the mines sort of folded. Then during World War II the mines were reopened to extract manganese. Part of the town burned down. A good deal has been vandalized. Now the Bureau of Land Management supervises what remains with a nice display in the old schoolhouse and walking tours of the remaining buildings and mine equipment. There is a resident caretaker, but the last permanent resident left in 1994.
