Sombrillo, NM ---- The dome of the ashram serving a Sikh community in northern New Mexico that numbers about 350 people startles as one rounds a bend in the road in this small community east of Espanola. The ashram was founded by Yogi Bhajan in 1970 and may be the largest Sikh community in the USA. The community also runs a billion dollar security business, Akal Security, that under Federal contracts provides guards to many facilities including embassies, detention centers, and NASA facilities. The folks in the community live a structured life that begins at 4 a.m. with 2 hours of meditation. And, as could be expected, there has been a degree of controversy about their business practices.
