Taos, NM ---- What look like small paper bags atop the wall are called farolitos. Though these particular ones may be electric, in Taos and in other parts of Northern New Mexico, it is a holiday tradition to put out paper bags secured in place with sand and lit from the inside by a small candle. Farolito: a little lantern. I've read on Wikipedia that in some places these are called luminaria. But then we're told that luminaria means "festival light" and refers to a festival bonfire.
