Sanitary Sewer

Taos, NM
It might appear that these sanitary sewer covers, manhole cover in common parlance, were placed in 1934. That is misleading. 1934 was the date of the incorporation of Taos as a town. Out of curiosity I spoke with the water and sewer department and found that this design is only used in the Plaza area. The original date of installation is unknown, but may date back several decades. The design was the town symbol at the time of manufacture, and though the department has a few left from its order many years ago, replicating that design now would be way too costly to repeat. So when you’re in the Plaza area, look down and enjoy some “street art.” — GB —
